Hammer Time: Obama Announces Tougher Sanctions On Russia

President Barack Obama gave a statement on the crisis in Ukraine Tuesday, announcing tougher U.S. sanctions on key sectors of the Russian economy, including energy, arms and finance.

"Today is a reminder that the United States means what it says," Obama said.

According to the Treasury Department, the U.S. penalties target the Bank of Moscow, the Russian Agricultural Bank and VTB Bank, the AP reports. Also listed on the Treasury designation is the United Shipbuilding Corp., which is based in St. Petersburg, Russia.

These new penalties against Russia follow tougher sanctions agreed to by European Union leaders earlier on Tuesday. White House spokesman Josh Earnest commented on the EU sanctions before Obama spoke, calling them welcome news.

"Russia is once again isolating itself from the international community, setting back decades of progress," Obama said. "It doesn't have to be this way."

About time this guy showed he has a spine....Of course, this is no doubt a carefully calculated political response.
In any action, Obama defers to politics and only if it is to his political advantage

War? Obama is at war. He is at war with anyone who dares not kowtow to his political whims.
He is at war with US Business. He is at war with anyone who dares not to live in an urban environment.

Pootin' is a well respected tough guy. I bet he's willing to put the Russian people through hell just to make his point, and the RW's here in America get to rub one off when they look at his picture ....

Dude, I have no clue where you spineless lefties got the idea that just because we conservatives oppose Obama's policies translates to support of Putin.
IMO, Putin is a scoundrel of the lowest order. He is former KGB. That makes him an enemy of the US and the American people.
Putin claims to have a good grip on Russia meanwhile organized crime which is rampant in Russia together with some of the most corrupt businesses on the planet, operate freely under his booger infested schnozola....
If Putin could get away with it, he'd reconstruct( by force if necessary) the Soviet Union.
He doesn't scare me. He makes me angry. The next time this guy gets on a horse, I'd like to shoot the horse in the ass with a pellet gun causing the horse to bolt hopefully dumping Putin onto a big rock. Or a perhaps a big bumpy cucumber crams up his ass ripping out his large intestines.

Has Putin called Obama and told him to shove his sanctions up his ass yet?

Would NaziCons prefer war with Russia?
Hey genius, Russia has been committing electronic acts of war on the US and its citizens for years.
The ID theft industry is rampant in Russia. Many internet scams originate in Russia.
And what is our government doing? Nothing.
Our hi tech people should be hacking every Russian computer both government and privately owned as possible.

Oooh, a stern letter. Putin must be shaking in his boots- with laughter, that is.

I don't think anyone will take Obama's threats seriously. He might as well draw another red line. What a joke.

when the price of sausage and vodka goes up, and incomes do not, popularity may suffer. And china just had its largest muslim terror attack today, which probably doesn't bode well long term for the notion that ethnic groups can vote to separate.

When Russia cuts the flow of natural gas to Europe by 25% and increases the price on the remaining stocks by 100% or more, it may not be the Russian people up in arms.

There is a however. When a product is withheld from the marketplace or an individual market, that product must be sold elsewhere lest it become less valuable( increased supply, lowered demand)..So if Russia does decide as punishment for the sanctions, reduce gas and oil to the EU, Russia must find other customers to purchase the surplus.
Anyway, if Russia decides to move forward with an embargo, the world energy markets will take a spanking.
Yeah, I would imagine the EU countries will be pissed, but they decided to go down this road and hopefully there are contingency plans in place.

President Obama is entirely correct in issuing the sanctions on Russia. I often wondered why that had not been done sooner under the circumstances. Putin has to learn that he cannot just go into a sovereign country and do as he pleases there. There are also many questions about the shooting of that plane that remain unanswered by Putin. So, yes, this action is entirely warranted and in line with what needed to be done and I am glad the European Union is on board as well although at one time they were wishy-washy about it. KUDOS to President Obama for issuing the sanctions! And Mr. President, if Mr. Putin still will not answer the questions that must be answered -- Keep The Sanctions Going Indefinitely. And while you're at it, ask Putin if he will ever come to his senses and drop the terrible laws he has in place against GLBT people in his country that are Outrageous, very hurtful, and punitive to the many innocent citizens who live there. Put his feet to the fire! That's the only way they will learn.
