I have a suggestion for background checks....do what the Japanese do. Ask for 3 references other than family members, as to one's mental stability. Sure, it would take a few more days, maybe a week to get a purchase approved, but a nut is going to have some problems coming up with 3 others who will vouch for him/her.

And there is the conundrum.....with concealed-carry the nut doesn't know if he can be stopped, while with open carry, his odds of doing his little outburst without getting killed don't look so good. I don't carry a firearm because I don't feel I have to. I never feel secure, am always surveying my surroundings and formulate a quick plan for fight or flight where ever I am.

I might add that the 3 references mentioned to buy a firearm should be conducted by the merchant, not the NICS.... they already have their hands full. Cost of doing business....if two out of three references are good...fine. If none of them can be contacted, no sale. The point is something has to change without normal, peaceful gun owners being penalized. Red-flags are flapping in the breeze in the majority of these episodes and they have to be acted upon for a change. I know guys who shouldn't have firearms near them and if asked, I'd say so.
