HB 1735 lowers the age from 21 to 18 to lawfully carry a handgun openly or concealed in Tennessee.

It looks like the argument is that if you can join the military and defend this Country at 18, then the same should apply for the average citizen.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Why not make the same case for consuming alcohol or tobacco?

We need to pick an age of majority and leave it there.

I don't care if it's 18 or 21 we just need to pick one

The law of the land says that you are an adult at 18, and that should apply across the board IMHO.

A person can join the military and kill or be killed for your Country, vote for this Country's leadership, make your own medical decisions, go to prison for breaking the law, engage in porn, etc etc, at 18... so why not be allowed to smoke, drink, and carry a pistol too? At 18, one is an "adult" right?

In this day and age, an 18 year old can acquire a handgun regardless of the law anyway. I highly doubt that a law saying you can't do it prevents anyone who want's to carry a pistol, drink or smoke at 18 from doing it anyway... the law just adds a punitive aspect to getting caught.

I think its a tremendous idea. If someone can vote at age 18 or get sent into battle for Biden's amusement at that age, they shouldn't be 2nd class citizens as far as the 2nd amendment.

I don't care what the age of majority is as long as we pick one and have it apply across the board

how about those under 21 who have been in the military have those rights mentioned?....if not you wait until at least 20 years old...

A very pressing issue that must certainly be resolved before all else.

The simply is no valid argument to be had. You can entrust an 18-year-old with the Uber adults responsibility giving up his life in order to defend his country you have no right to deny him anything else. There is nothing that can be proffered antithetically that will stand up to this argument.

Self Defense is more critical than booze or smoking.

I think the data will tell whether it's good or bad. If there's more gunfights at the Mall we'll know.

No...we won't.....the guys shooting at each other at the mall are criminals who can't buy, own or carry guns in the first place.......we already have laws that allow us to arrest them, and if you look at their criminal records, they will have been arrested over and over again.....the problem is the democrat party judges and prosecutors who keep releasing these guys......

Of course criminals get guns. Were they criminals before they got guns? Blaming Democrats hasn't been effective for the past 25 years.

In a nutshell.

Law or no law, criminals are going to break the law... and will do so more often afforded the opportunity be getting released back into society. You can have all the laws you want, but with no teeth or enforcement, they mean nothing.

Agreed. The government recognizes people as adults at age 18 in this country. That should apply to everything.

Maybe you can't smoke or drink before you are 21 in Tenn. but that's another issue. You can join the U.S. Military at 18 and drive a tank or shoot an artillery piece and certainly fire a M-16 on full or selective fire. If you are old enough to fight and possibly die for your Country you should be mentally mature enough to possess a handgun.

I joined the National Guard at 17....had I joined the regular army instead, I could have been sent overseas to use a rifle to kill for this country.....by I would have been to young to own a rifle to protect my family at home.
