How does relegation work in European soccer? Would it work in American team sports?

I believe all four major league sports here in America have over-expanded. Especially the NHL. Plus living here in Arizona, before they got their new stadium our Cardinals seemed to be parasites, just raking in the dough generated by other teams in the league.

Soccer's relegation comes to mind as a means to deal with expansion and with teams that seem to have no care to pay the price to win or have ownership too inept to cease losing. I have a general concept of relegation that allows teams, based on performance, to move up or down a league. But that's the extent of it.

Let's say the NFL expanded to 36 teams, split into 24 in a premier league and 12 in a secondary league. I'm curious how relegation would work and how are players contracts are handled if their team is advanced or demoted. Just curious.
