GOP Sen John Cornyn tweeted this weekend: “‘We were the first to assert that the more complicated the forms assumed by civilization, the more restricted the freedom of the individual must become.’ - Benito Mussolini.”
It is obvious he used the quote as a way to warn that an ever-expanding government is the first step toward fascist rule. It’s as if to say, “Do you want to know how we get to fascism? Here’s a fascist explaining it in his own words.”
But the Internet is crawling with dishonest and stupid people, so now Cornyn is being accused of offering both a tacit and an explicit endorsement of Mussolini. Because of course he is.
“GOP Senator John Cornyn’s Weird Shoutout To Mussolini Backfires Spectacularly,” read HuffPost’s headline.
Raw Story’s headline read, “‘Oooh! Do Hitler next!’: Texas Republican ripped to shreds for heralding Mussolini in Twitter quote.”
“SEN. JOHN CORNYN QUOTES BENITO MUSSOLINI ... In Bizarre Tweet,” blared TMZ in a headline that couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be in all caps or not.
Hell, even everyone’s favorite freshman, AOC, got in on the action
