At first it seems a bit crazy, but a friend turned me on to some videos that show how easily voting machines can be rigged to give votes to whoever one wants and not leave a paper trail. What I think is most concerning is that the technology for sending tallied votes around is from the 1990's and easily hacked and can be tampered with without any trace.

Honestly, I'm not sure there is a definite answer to your questions. Yes there are instances of voter fraud or missing ballots or miscounting, or, or, or...and yet it is all we have. It's like the law & justice system.....it doesn't always work the way it's supposed too or for everybody. It comes down to your own personal dialogue...put blind faith in the system & vote......or worry about the fraud & not vote. But you also throw away your opportunity to maybe make a difference.

With Donald Trump running around saying the election is rigged--is why you're thinking that.

1. They check electronic voting machines often to make certain they're reading right. In fact that is a requirement. If they stick a sample ballot in the machine and it reads wrong to the ballot, they will be looking for the person who did it immediately.
2. There has never been an instance where someone was caught or charged with rigging an electronic voting machine, yes slot machines at a casino, people have been caught and prosecuted for that, but never elections.

To instill some more confidence, volunteer to work at your polling precinct. If 700 people come into vote, there will be one democrat to one republican (required) you won't know who they are who will be standing over your shoulder and watching everything you do. At the end of the day there had better be 700 ballots, if one is missing they will spend all night to find it. The ballot box is either counted at the location, or is locked (you don't have the key) but you will be accompanied by others to deliver it to a central counting location, and again one democrat to one republican with several others watching those ballots being counted. At the end the Secretary of each State will "certify" the vote insuring it is accurate.

Our system of free and fair elections is the most admired in the world. On average you will find 34 fraudulent votes to every BILLION votes cast. It happens, but it is extremely rare, and only very STUPID people will try it because the penalties are so severe. It's considered a FELONY. That extra vote is not going to change the outcome of an election, but it will change your life forever. Here is a woman they caught trying to vote twice.

It doesn't need to be rigged for your vote not to count. The way the voting is set up means that the votes of millions of people don't count.
