Letās say, for example, that my dad and uncle, both engineers, had an idea for an electrical thingy that would improve Americansā lives. The government, eager to support the efforts of scientists to develop useful products, gives a grant of $100,000 to Dad and Uncle.
The two spend three years, while working their regular jobs, drawing up plans, having lots of āmissesā as the thingy didnāt work right, and thenā¦.voila!ā¦..they figured out a new mechanism that would allow it to function as hoped. They patent it, and start production, and they charge $99 for the thingy, and sell lots of them - making about $300,000 a year, split between the two of them.
Does the government THEN, after my dad and uncle used their engineering brilliance to develop the thing, get to step in, āsnatchā the patent, and then claim the government owns it, and start producing it themselves, leaving the inventors of the product high and dry?
