I'd don't believe money is needed, per se but traditionally family, education, and better life choices have played a role in one's odds of getting elected. The founders themselves may have intended to be men of the people, but they came from an aristocratic stock - well bred, well, fed, and well wed, it is said.

I'd venture that social media is probably the best equalizer, in terms of potential for getting elected today, and is the primary reason why Trump won the election, if he hadn't leveraged Twitter, Facebook, and so on, I don't believe he would have had the shot of winning which he did.
My bet is the next president, whoever they are, will have a popular social media following.

I don't believe DumBama even had one million to start out with. Certainly when he started to gain some popularity, donations came rolling in, particularly from minority organizations.
