I was watching the evening news tonight, and they ran a story about some guy in Big Spring TX who has come up with a novel idea.

Seems that he was looking for a way to help his community and came up with something called a "blessing box". It's a box that he sets up on his property, and he then fills it with non perishable items and toiletries. The things are free for anyone to take them, or if they are so inclined, they can leave items in the boxes for others to use.

Kind of a neat idea. I think I'm gonna talk to my roomie and see what she thinks of this. I might build one and stock it, just to see how the karma works.

If anyone is interested, here's a link to the story.

You know, I'd probably also have to check with the city, because my house is just down the block from a school. But, considering all the kids that are going hungry nowadays, that might not be a bad thing if the city says it's okay.

We have a similar kind of program up here except with books. Folks have fancy box constructions in their yards all over the city where you can take or leave books - kind of a massive city wide library of sorts. They even shovel paths to the book boxes heh

Yeah, i saw one of those down in Carson City too. It was over on the westside of town, a few blocks from the Governors mansion.

I saw this on the news earlier. It is a great idea. We have the book boxes here.

You know, this is the first time I've heard about book boxes. Hmm........might be something else I can put in a blessing box if I put one up.

Over the past day, my roomie and I have been talking about the various pros and cons of putting one up in our yard, and we're seriously considering one.

That way, when the conservatives on this board tell me to go and take care of the homeless myself, I can simply post a picture of my stocked blessing box.

<3 It's a great idea, you should do it!

Yeah, it is a great idea and we are seriously considering it, but there is one HUGE consideration that we have to take into account. We live just down the road from a school, and lots of kids go walking past going to and coming home from school. The thing that concerns me is that it is an elementary school, and the possibility for vandalism is pretty high. I don't mind doing something like this, but I also don't want kids going through the box and vandalizing it just because it's there.

But, at the same time, some of those kids are probably hungry, and that would be where they get a meal for the day.

We're still thinking on it and working it out.

hmmm I'm afraid that kind of thing isn't really in my wheel house, we're pretty low on crime up here. I mean I haven't locked the doors to my house, shop, shed, nor any of my vehicles in like 43 years (aka /never/) heh

If they do, you can always remove it. Or leave a note to please take only if you really need it.

Unfortunately, some places have banned the book boxes.
What's Wrong With a Little Free Library?

Well if you ever wanted to see how terrible red tape is, that's a story for it lol What a bunch of ninnies.

You know, considering that we live close by a school, maybe a little free library would be a better idea. I'm gonna have to run this by my roomie, but it sounds a bit easier to keep up with, and we both love books and have lots of them.

Just make sure they are age appropriate. :eusa_naughty:

Never been big on books with lots of sex in them. To me, it kinda takes away from the story.

To me, it allows a writer to not have to give much thought to the plot.

Agreed. And yeah, I like sex just as much as the next person, but I don't like it when it's in a movie or book that is there to entertain me.

If I want sex, I'll buy a dirty magazine or watch porno.
