About the security content of Security Update 2017-001

This issue does not quite live up to the hype.

By default, MacOS does not have the root account enabled, and the bast majority of owners would probably not know how to enable it.

The “bug” is that if you do know how to enable root, then it is possible, and in fact quite easy, to enable it without setting a password to it. Do that, and if the wrong person gets access to the machine in question, then that person can log in as root without entering a password; and you do not want the wrong person to log into your machine with root access.

One can hope that anyone savvy enough to even know how to enable root access will know better than to do so without setting a password on the root account.
