There is also cable and broadcast tv and radio. That means massive competition among news sources. If a person is dissatisfied with a news source they are able to switch to another with little effort.

With so many sources of news, control like that of the past has become impossible. The way being used today is by making sources appear fake and controlled by conspiratorial entities. Demographics are targeted by the big media sources for marketing and competition purposes and will put spins on the stories, but spin is not the same as outright fake or fraudulent reporting, and the spin can be exposed if it is absolutely fraudulent and fake. There is the internet, social media, and competition.

The trump regime is using the accusations of "FAKE" news to neutralize the press and media by convincing their base of support that there is a vast conspiracy and hence, the public should not believe anything they read or hear in the media. That is the controlling factor and is what has made the consistent lying from the administration on key news stories possible. Without a shred of objective and provable data, the regime has managed to convince a demographic, the base of trump supporters, that the evil and demon controlled media is conspiring with provable objective data to attack the trump administration and trump himself. Real news becomes fake and fake news becomes real.
