It is really concerning that so many of our soldiers are out of shape. Whatever happened to discipline?

Actually, the real problem is that the military's height and weight standards are unrealistic.

The army thought a man of my height should never weigh more than 189 lbs. With my build, that is simply unrealistic, no matte how much I dieted.

The BMI is fucking useless. Just using the BMI every weight lifter on the planet is obese.

Overweight is not obese
BMI over 25 is overweight

Can they still meet the physical fitness standards?

What is your MOS?
If an Army Cook is obese, does anyone care?

Well yes, they do and should care.

Presumably they meet the standards when they enlist, then gain weight. Just like police and fire fighters. The Services are not going to toss them out when there is a shortage of soldiers, sailors, and airmen coming in.

I'm not in the military but am in excellent physical condition. Taking pride in your appearance should be a goal for every person.

They didn't forty years ago when there wasn't a shortage

Funny ... there's was only a handful of Americans cooking for us and they were all skinny as skinny could be ...

We had to run 1-1/2 miles every six months ... or walk 3 miles ... within a certain time based on age ... or Article 15 discharge ...

The OP is grossly misinformed ...

What is the risk if a cook, a mechanic or logistics specialist is overweight?

Because you never know when you might actually need to fight in a battle.

I realize it is a bit different in the Marines, but every Marine is a rifleman first and whatever their job is second.

The job of the military is to protect the nation.

I don't know about. Hope you are right.

Pride is a sin ... and so is gluttony ... if cared about my appearance, I'd still be paying child support ... think "Theodore Kaczynski" after a bath ... not proud a'tall ...

BMI isn’t an accurate tool for measuring body fat. Someone can have a lot of dense muscle and be “obese” simply because BMI is just measured by height and weight
