Probably the most misunderstood quote Jesus made. If Jesus was who he said he was, why would he make such a statement while up on the cross?

Answer is simple once you know it.

The Bible Book and verse numbering system was not developed until hundreds of years after Jesus. So how a Rabbi got people to read a certain text, he would quote the first line. Jesus was quoting the first line of Psalm 22, which describes his crucifixion so that people would know his death was merely what must happen.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from my cries of anguish?
My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you are the one Israel
In you our ancestors put their trust;
they trusted and you delivered them.
To you they cried out and were saved;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by everyone, by the people.
All who see me mock me;
they hurl insults, shaking their heads.
“He trusts in the Lord,” they say,
“let the Lord rescue him.
Let him deliver him,
since he delights him.”

Yet you brought me out of the womb;
you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.
From birth I was cast on you;
from my mother’s womb you have been my God.

Do not be far from me,
for trouble is near
and there is no one to help.

Many bulls surround me;
strong bulls of Bashan me.
Roaring lions that tear their prey
open their mouths wide against me.
I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
it has melted within me.
My mouth is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
you lay me in the dust of death.

Dogs surround me,
a pack of villains encircles me;
they pierce my hands and my feet.
All my bones are on display;
people stare and gloat over me.
They divide my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.

But you, Lord, do not be far from me.
You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
Deliver me from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dogs.
Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

I will declare your name to my people;
in the assembly I will praise you.
You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
For he has not despised or scorned
the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
but has listened to his cry for help.

From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows.
The poor will eat and be satisfied;
those who seek the Lord will praise him-
may your hearts live forever!

All the ends of the earth
will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
will bow down before him,
for dominion belongs to the Lord
and he rules over the nations.

All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
those who cannot keep themselves alive.
Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord.
They will proclaim his righteousness,
declaring to a people yet unborn:
He has done it!

When I was searching for God, I sure didn't understand that quote, nor the Trinity ( very hard to understand , especially when a beginner reading the bible too..

After I watched the movie Jesus of Nazareth about 30 years ago, it all began to make sense to me. The horrific pain Jesus went through, He must have felt so abandoned and alone.. forsaken: to feel deserted

As a christian , many of the experiences and parables of Jesus, have helped and given hope to me.while going through my own trials..He came in the flesh to our level as the ultimate sacrifice, died to bridge us to God by the Holy Spirit.

Trinity:
Father, Son, Holy Spirit

Thank you...

The Holy Martyr Longinus the Centurion, a Roman soldier, served in Judea under the command of the Governor, Pontius Pilate. When our Savior Jesus Christ was crucified, it was the detachment of soldiers under the command of Longinus which stood watch on Golgotha, at the very foot of the holy Cross. Longinus and his soldiers were eyewitnesses of the final moments of the earthly life of the Lord, and of the great and awesome portents that appeared at His death. These events shook the centurion’s soul. Longinus believed in Christ and confessed before everyone, “Truly this was the Son of God” (Mt. 27:54).

Martyr Longinus the Centurion, who stood at the Cross of the Lord

I think the Centurion displays some of the best reaction to the day's events.

Isn't the new movie Risen about Martyr ? I am going to watch that today...

Perhaps a remake of Barnabus..in the 1960's

Risen is an epic movie, surpasses all Charleston Heston classics.
Without spoiling it, the movie starts after the crucifixion and is a detective story about a Roman Tribune ordered to find out what happened to the body.

Ya, I thought god would save Jesus too, after all, god likes gays. Or so the bible tells us.

It seems your life has blinded you to truth and love. Hope your circumstances improve soon.
God kicked Adam out of eden for having sex with the woman, instead of staying in (homo) heaven with god. You should really read the bible at some point.

Thanks for proving my point. Have a nice day.
You too. :biggrin:

PS so your god hates gays? :dunno:

He isn't just mine. He hates no one, but does dislike certain behaviors of people.

So then why did god make gays? There are many, many examples of homosexuality all through nature.

Actually we were discussing a specific part of the Bible relating to today's Good Friday status. Your point was to derail and mock.

"My God, My God, Why Have You Foresaken Me?".....says the child dying of bone cancer (as the all-powerful god steadfastly, day after day, refuses to give us the final cure for cancer.)

Dumbest post ever award.
So god has NOT foresaken the small Christian child dying of bone cancer - even though all-powerful god would of course possess the final cure to cancer? Please let us know - I'm confused.

The doctors who were going to cure cancer were aborted in 1975-1980.

Us Scientific Humanists, if we had god/Jesus/Allah's alleged super-powers, would of course have given the final cure for cancer to humanity (and educated them enough that it's the final cure) many many centuries ago. If you had those powers (just say), Weatherman, would you have done that as well? Please let us know.

Keep in mind that this question goes to the level of your morality, and if there is a loving, caring after-life judge, then he would take your level of morality into account in determining any after-life reward/punishment you might receive. You might just want, to be safe, to err on the side of loving/caring and answer "yes" to this question.

You seem to think that innocent children dying of a curable disease (an all-powerful god can give us the cure) is a laughing matter.
