Polls don't mean someone is a great, or even good leader. Trump was great for RINO's and the democrats. He funded millions in gender studies in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The South seceded over slavery, but the North did not enter the war over slavery. Lincoln mentioned on several occasions that he was open to permitting slavery if he could still "preserve the Union."

This was most obvious in the fact that 4 slave states remained in the Union: Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware. Even DC permitted slavery until about a year into the war.

Impossible to do a ranking with politicians who are still relevant to the current period. You don't know how much of an impact they'll have on future events, also there's clearly going to be bias that you wouldn't get for some president from 100 years ago.

The South had additional contributing factors involving tariffs, but yes, slavery was the main reason for secession.

On the other hand, the North had a similar model for labor that was just more efficient. They had a steady supply of poor immigrants that weren't officially slaves, but they were paid very little, and businesses had the additional advantage of not having to house or feed them.

In short, traditional slavery was rapidly becoming outmoded by other forms of exploiting labor. Even if the Civil War had not happened, slavery would have eventually ended due to its inefficiencies.

Later on, sharecropping would become slavery's replacement.
