Obama says NSA not spying on Merkel's cellphone

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration denied a report that the National Security Agency tapped the mobile phone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

President Obama assured Merkel during a phone conversation Wednesday that the United States is not monitoring the chancellor's communication, White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

The German magazine Der Spiegel reported that Merkel phoned Obama to discuss the allegations, which are based on disclosures from NSA leaker Edward Snowden.

"The United States is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of the chancellor," Carney said.

A statement from Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said the German government "has received information that the chancellor's cellphone may be monitored by American intelligence."

Seibert said that in the phone call with Obama, the German leader made clear that such practices are "completely unacceptable" and called on the United States to clarify the extent of its surveillance in Germany.

This from the same administration that assured us they were not spying on Americans? Why would anyone believe a thing Obama says?

Vee have our vays of listening to you talk.

Wasn't Nixon impeached for illegal information gathering?

My, my how far progressives have come.

Now that the world knows how bad obama is, what will they do about it? France and Germany will address a world summit to discuss methods of dealing with obama's espionage.

Yes, they call it espionage.

Yahoo News Canada - Latest News & Headlines

The two-day Brussels summit, called to tackle a range of social and economic issues, will now be overshadowed by debate on how to respond to the alleged espionage by Washington against two of its closest European Union allies.

The exposure of such espionage came from information revealed by Edward Snowden. He has much more information to release. I hope he does it soon.

My, my how far progressives have come.

No. Nixon never knew about any information gathering. Nixon was subjected to the possibility of impeachment by covering up the information gathering by Dean, Haldeman and Erlichmann.

obama is king of the world. As her monarch, obama is within his rights to bug Merkel's bedroom if he so chooses.

We, along with allies, have been eavesdropping on folks for a long time, so what's the big deal now?

ECHELON; WORLDWIDE CONVERSATIONS BEING RECEIVED BY THE ECHELON SYSTEM MAY FALL INTO THE WRONG HANDS AND INNOCENT PEOPLE MAY BE TAGGED AS SPIES

STEVE KROFT, co-host:

If you made a phone call today or sent an e-mail to a friend, there's a good chance what you said or wrote was captured and screened by the country's largest intelligence agency. The top-secret Global Surveillance Network is called Echelon, and it's run by the National Security Agency and four English-speaking allies: Canada, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

The mission is to eavesdrop on enemies of the state: foreign countries, terrorist groups and drug cartels. But in the process, Echelon's computers capture virtually every electronic conversation around the world.

Actually it is the job of the spys to spy on foreign leaders and their Governments, so instead of, according to Obama, that he is spying on American citizens. Go figure.

The smart ones don't. They realize he has lost all credibility, but because they hate to admit how wrong they are and how right the GOP was about delaying the Unaffordable Health Act for citizens, a year, they will continue to go down with the ship....then at the last minute they will jump the Titanic with their tails between their legs....

The collapse of ObamaCare is the tip of the iceberg for the magical Obama presidency.

From the moment he emerged in the public eye with his 2004 speech at the Democratic Convention and through his astonishing defeat of the Clintons in 2008, Barack Obama's calling card has been credibility. He speaks, and enough of the world believes to keep his presidency afloat. Or used to.

All of a sudden, from Washington to Riyadh, Barack Obama's credibility is melting.

Amid the predictable collapse the past week of HealthCare.gov's too-complex technology, not enough notice was given to Sen. Marco Rubio's statement that the chances for success on immigration reform are about dead. Why? Because, said Sen. Rubio, there is "a lack of trust" in the president's commitments.

Nixon wasn't impeached... he resigned facing imminent impeachment over his cover-up of the Watergate break-ins.

obama just gave a speech announcing his intention to legalize millions of illegals and basically, remove our borders.

If true, it is inexcusable and stupid. The question becomes, if true, when did it begin and when (if it did) was it stopped.

Did President Obama know, and if so, when did he know.?

Did President Bush II know?

The Echo Chamber - represented by the ruck, above - have already passed judgment and begun the usual prother sans curiosity or circumspection and thus giving once again aid and comfort to America's Enemies.

Gawd, he's desperate......

You do know that katzndogz's post is a lie, but you don't care, do you?

The Senate passed an immigration bill, the house has not. You pals in the H. of Rep. - those 40 or so radical Republicans - keep the impotent Speaker from bringing Immigration Reform to the floor for a vote, and allowing a conference committee to resolve the problems resultant from Ronald Reagans' Amnesty in the 1980's.

President Obama has asked for common sense and comprehensive reform. To characterize his comments as did katzndogz is at best disingenuous, given the source however, it is simply one more lie from a despicable person.

I understand that the government has probably been spying on every significant nation for decades now, but spying on another world leader's personal cellphone may set a new precedent. The fact that many people aren't surprised may be the saddest part.

Of course this just may be more red meat for the Rabid Righties to feast on.

"IMPEACH, IMPEACH"

Back in the real world..... "Both leaders agreed to intensify further the cooperation between our intelligence services with the goal of protecting the security of both countries and of our partners, as well as protecting the privacy of our citizens."
