Obama takes on power plants as part of new climate plan | Reuters

President Barack Obama tried to revive his stalled climate change agenda on Tuesday, promising new rules to cut carbon emissions from U.S. power plants and other domestic actions including support for renewable energy.

Obama also signaled he would block construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada if it contributed to climate change. That does not mean the project is doomed, however. A State Department report, which Obama could reference, has said the pipeline would not change the outlook for carbon emissions because the development of Canada's oil sands would continue whether it is approved or not.
With Congress unlikely to pass climate legislation, Obama said his administration would set rules using its executive authority.

It's tantamount to kicking the ladder out from beneath the feet of many Americans struggling in today's economy.

Obama pulling out his Billy-club again !

Natural gas production is outpacing coal production and gas is cheap. The market is already responding to the economics of power production and gas plants are replacing the old coal plants. I had a rate increase of 2% when they built the new gas plant. Wow such an increase for cleaner air to breath.
Coal is being exported in larger numbers and clean coal is being developed mainly for the DOD to use in it's energy policy cause they predict that they will need an alternative to oil if it is cut off due to war.

Bush took a hit also.

President George W. Bush again took the opportunity to tout biofuels in his annual State of the Union Address this year. Ethanol demand soared last year thanks to his "addicted to oil" comment. He again called for a dramatic increase in domestic alternative fuel use, however, his goal of 35 billion gallons by 2017 may be less achievable than last year's comments.

Bush called for an almost fivefold increase in the production of ethanol and other alternative fuels to supplement gasoline over the next decade. If realized, his proposal would cut gasoline consumption by 20% over the next 10 years and cut total imports by the equivalent of 3/4 of all the oil now imported from the Middle East.
Bush Pushes Biofuels in State of the Union - Farm Futures

In 2005, during the Bush administration, Congress passed the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) as part of the 2005 Energy Policy Act. In 2007, the RFS was amended in the Energy Independence and Security Act. To evaluate these policies, Congress asked the National Academy of Sciences to evaluate the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) goals,[iii] the potential environmental benefits and harm from biofuels production, and barriers to achieving the RFS mandate.

The Energy Independence and Security Act mandates 36 billion gallons of biofuels to be produced by 2022, of which 21 billion gallons must come from advanced biofuels by 2022 and the remainder, 15 billion gallons, from corn-based ethanol. Of the 21 billion gallons of advanced biofuels, 16 billion gallons must come from cellulosic biofuel by 2022 and 1 billion gallons must come from biomass-based diesel by 2012.[iv] Because cellulosic biofuel is not yet commercially viable, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) “is required to set the cellulosic biofuel standard each year based on the volume projected to be available during the following year.” In 2011, the EPA reduced the mandated level of 250 million gallons of cellulosic biofuel to 6.6 million gallons. EPA’s proposed 2012 standard sets the cellulosic ethanol level at 3.45 to 12.9 million gallons[v], well below the 500 million gallons mandated in the 2007 law.

Lately, much has been made with the Solyndra bankruptcy. Some people claim that it was an isolated incident, but that is incorrect. Solyndra was a product of policymakers thinking they were smarter than the market. They argued that Solyndra could “work” if the government would provide loan guarantees. With cellulosic ethanol, the Bush administration argued that a guaranteed market through a renewable fuel standard would “work.” In both these cases and in many others, the loan guarantees, the mandates, and the subsidies did not work because the technology is just too expensive even with millions or even billions of dollars in special treatment.

The ignorant Obama voters once again NEVER paid attention to what Obama said.. his actual words...

"So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted."
Coal official calls Obama comments ?unbelievable? | West Virginia Record

Why would ANY idiot want any business to go BANKRUPT???
There are always other solutions that could have been implemented.
BUT Obama being the business ignoramous , ONLY solution is to bankrupt them!

So OBAMA bankrupts companies laying off people having to pay benefits... and losing tax revenue!
This is not the ONLY anti-business sentiment of Obama!

“I happen to be a proponent of a single payer universal health care program.” ...Barack Obama on single payer in 2003 | Physicians for a National Health Program -

This means 1,300 companies going out of business.. if there is ONLY one payer!
This means 400,000 people unemployed!
This means $100 billion a year in federal/state/local and yes your property taxes INCREASING as these companies won't be around!

Totally ignorant of how the engines of taxation works in this country!
Ignorant as to how over 90% of Federal revenue comes from businesses employing people paying taxes and employers paying Medicare/SS!

how many people with black lung should die so you can have coal fired power plants?

Well hell yeah, he has JOBS, unemployment, the dept, etc all TAKEN CARE of so now he is going after our energy source..

what a great guy as president..

obama intends to end energy in the US. Make it so expensive that no one but him and his friends have power. It's not like he has an electric bill to pay.

I'd replace coal with nuclear...The bulk at least. After that I'd be ok with wind, solar, geo-thermal and wave. ;)

do you always use lies to support your fallacies?

and what's scary is his low information base doesn't give a shit...just like anything he does they will follow him...if he leads them to jump off a cliff, they will..

scary like Jim Jones and his cult members

my, my, more emotive reactionism with a dose of ignorance.

Nothing like the fear of change.

well for sure people want CHANGE forced on them by some idiot Ideologue...if we had other cheaper source going change would be ALRIGHT..
and you should talk about emotive reactionary with a dose of ignorance..what do you call your post?

What's so scary is that the low information voter is dragging everyone into their abyss. They are convinced that power is going to just appear, like magic. All the power plants can be closed, and you'll still be able to turn on the lights.

The coal plants aren't going to close. At least not as many as was once thought. The Chinese and Indians are buying the coal plants and taking the coal back to power their plants.

India, China buying U.S. coal mines, shale gas fields | Grist

Foreign companies are buying up U.S. coal mines.

In a statement on Nov. 12, the chairman of Coal India Ltd., a state-controlled entity and the world’s largest coal producer, with a near-monopoly on Indian coal mining, confirmed that the firm was in talks with several U.S. coal companies to buy stakes in mines throughout the continental U.S. According to the Associated Press, Coal India has budgeted $1.2 billion this year alone to buy American, Australian, and Indonesian coal mines. Facing voracious energy demands and a yawning gap between domestic supplies of coal and projected needs, the company is going on a global buying spree.

It is not alone. Reliance Industries, also of India, bought a $3.4 billion stake in three U.S. shale gas companies earlier this year. In March, India’s Essar Group acquired Trinity Coal for $600 million; the company has active mines in Kentucky and West Virginia. China’s ENN Energy Trading, a subsidiary of one of China’s largest natural gas companies, signed a preliminary purchase agreement in early November with Cheniere Energy for 20 years of processing capacity at Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG terminal, located on the border of Louisiana and Texas. And China National Offshore Oil Corporation Ltd. agreed in October to pay up to $2.16 billion for a 33.3 percent stake in Chesapeake Energy’s interest in the Eagle Ford shale play. The deal, if concluded, would represent the largest Chinese investment ever in the U.S. energy sector.

People are not being forced. try not to be a chicken little too much.

Power companies are increasingly switching to natural gas to fuel their electricity plants, driven by low prices and forecasts of vast supplies for years to come.
