World leaders push big companies to pay more taxes

It's time to make Google, Apple, and other multinational companies pay more taxes. That's the message from President Barack Obama and the leaders of the world's leading economies at a summit ending Friday.

We don't want to discourage the companies from creating jobs. But we obviously don't want to encourage companies to take away the profits and squirrel them away and not share them with anybody else," he said.

Ain't it something? The definition of greed is completely backwards anymore. Wanting a share of someone else's income is fine, admirable in fact, while wanting to keep as much of your own earnings as possible makes one greedy.

Corporations should be taxed at 0%; not to show them how much we appreciate them, but to make economics the reason for their actions rather than tax avoidance. There will always be some country that will undercut all others’ rates in order to lure corporate headquarters and intellectual property; remove those incentives and capital and jobs will flow to where they are most efficient. Income taxes should only be levied on individuals, based upon where it is earned, or alternatively the country of residence. As the corporations would no longer shoulder the burden and the employee’s taxes would necessarily rise, they will demand higher wages to compensate and will reach a new equilibrium. This would reduce the opportunities to evade and put the burden of funding an individual’s government where it belongs; with the individual who benefits from that government. Also, most individuals do not have teams of tax attorneys to push gray areas of tax law, therefore collections will be greater and challenges in tax courts less frequent. Lobbying influential legislators for tax concessions would no longer be necessary. I don't see a down side.

You completely missed the facts in play.

The fact is that many large corporations have a lot of their overseas profits "squirreled away" outside the US because if they bring that money home to the States, those profits will be taxed.

Those companies don't want to pay taxes on those profits, so they bank it. It's just sitting there.

It won't "put them out of business" if they are taxed on that money. That's just plain stupid to even say so.

Microsoft just found a way to spend its money instead of bringing it home. They decided to buy Nokia instead.

The reason that money is sitting around outside the US is because our taxes are higher than the taxes in other countries.
