They only used it as a slogan because they think middle class Americans are dumb and if they said the tax the rich they thought middle America would blindly cheer them on and say "those democrats are out there fighting against the rich elite for us". They were never going to because they are also the rich elite. Democrats we're just trying to trick "dumb Americans" into siding with them.
