I don’t know what to say about Marshae Jones. Except her case is tragic, and heartbreaking, and the worst thing in the world.

If you want to talk about hypocrisy, though, and unintended consequences, I’m your huckleberry.

Because no matter how much Alabama vows to care for life and the unborn and the just born, children and babies die all the time in Alabama because of the state’s actions, and its inaction.

Alabama’s infant mortality rate – it sounds so clinical that we should just call it the dead baby rate – is permanently among the worst in the nation, and markedly higher than the national rate. If they counted miscarriages and fetal deaths it ought to be impossible for a pro-lifer to ignore.

One of the reasons why Alabama’s rate is so high is that many of the mothers, particularly in poor rural counties, simply do not have access to medical care. That Alabama leaders, for political gain, refused to expand Medicaid, and that has made access to care even scarcer in the state. Unintended consequences, I guess. But consequences nonetheless.


Funny how Alabama politicians never hold themselves responsible.

They hold press conferences and brag when they arrest pregnant women who test positive for drugs. In recent years Alabama has prosecuted more mothers for chemical endangerment than any other state. But it does as much harm to children as it does good. Amnesty International has said the policy doesn’t prevent drug abuse so much as it keeps those mothers from getting the healthcare that might just save their babies, and themselves.

It is easy to be shocked at the stunning nature of the Marshae Jones case, even if it isn’t exactly what it seems.

I just dream of an Alabama that is shocked by its own hypocrisy.

Apparently the evidence was given before a grand jury.
