I see this junk and want to throw my hands up in disgust. How can saying words like these out loud teach their meanings, let alone spelling?

You have to teach both, as reading teachers do.
Phonics can help with unfamiliar words, but not always. Some words, like the ones you listed, are called "sight words" and just have to be memorized.
If a reader is just attacking words one at a time, no, they aren't reading fast enough for comprehension. That is beginning reader stuff. Fluency is necessary for actual comprehension.
