WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Michael Mukasey appointed a prosecutor Monday to pursue possible criminal charges against Republicans who were involved in the controversial firings of U.S. attorneys.

His move follows the leading recommendation of a Justice Department investigation that harshly criticized Bush administration officials, members of Congress and their aides for the ousters, which were seen by many as politically motivated.

Not every Democrat in Washington is accusing President Trump of foul play in his decision to ask for the resignation of the remaining Obama-appointed U.S. attorneys. Rep. Jerry Nadler is no cheerleader for Trump (he called him "illegitimate" before his inauguration), but he admitted on Monday that the firing of attorneys from the previous administration is completely normal.

"There's nothing unusual about removing the former president's U.S. attorneys," he said on on CNN's "New Day."
