A Russian airliner carrying 224 passengers and crew crashed in Egypt's Sinai peninsula on Saturday, the Egyptian prime minister's office and civil aviation ministry said.

The Airbus A-321, operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia with registration number KGL-9268, was flying from the Sinai coastal resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St Petersburg in Russia when it went down in a desolate mountainous area of central Sinai soon after daybreak, the aviation ministry said.

There was no immediate word on casualties. Egyptian security sources said there was no indication that the plane had been shot down. Islamist militants are active in parts of Sinai.

ISMAILIA, Egypt/CAIRO (Reuters) - A Russian airliner carrying 224 passengers and crew crashed in Egypt's Sinai peninsula on Saturday, and a security officer at the scene said most passengers appeared to have been killed.

The Airbus A321, operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia under the brand name Metrojet, was flying from the Sinai Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St Petersburg in Russia when it went down in a desolate mountainous area of central Sinai soon after daybreak, the aviation ministry said.

An authoritative Sweden-based aviation tracking service said the aircraft, having made an apparently smooth take off, lurched into a rapid descent shortly after approaching cruising altitude.

"I now see a tragic scene," an Egyptian security officer at the scene told Reuters by telephone. "A lot of dead on the ground and many who died whilst strapped to their seats.

This news is breaking now about a Russian jet that was returning to Russia from Egypt and has crashed in a mountainous area of Sanai. There are several photos coming out now of the family members hearing the news of the crash. Very sad story. My prayers are for these people. What an awful tragedy!

In his book Red Storm Rising, Tom Clancy describes a scenario where the USSR bombs it's own children's chorus event, killing thousands of adults and children, and then blaming it on the Germans to justify an invasion.
