Did you ever see the film, The Bedford Incident?

In 1967 I was standing watch on the fantail of a destroyer when over the 1MC came the call to battle stations, followed with the words which got my full attention, "This is not a drill".

I was closest to my battle station, the 5" stern gun and followed my training. When the gun was fully maned, the gun captain (a WW II Vet, who served on a DD which escorted Indianapolis in delivering the A bomb in 1945) told us we had a sonar contact, and it was believed to be a soviet sub.

We remained at battle stations for hours, and continued on a search as another asset - ASW Air Support - began a search pattern and another DD was steaming toward our location. Finally we got the order to stand down, since we only had that one contact.

That made me a very happy sailor.

I really think the days of war between giant, powerful nations is over. Ease of travel and communication has connected humanity in a way that makes it seem very unlikely that something like that will happen again. Also the people that run these nations understand that war could literally mean the end of life on Earth.

Baloney.

Admiral's almost always say this nonsense so that the can justify the massive amount of taxpayer money they spend. He is drumming up fear...period.

Great Britain alone spends more on her armed forces than Russia does. France, GB and Germany's combined military spending dwarfs Russian military spending (by almost 3 times).

Russia is a near ZERO conventional threat to the West. Their military is a tiny fraction of it's Cold War days. If they started a conventional war with NATO today, they would be trounced...and they know it.

This story is overblown hype to put fear into the ignorant masses...period.

My reference wasn't meant as a rating of the movie, I posted what was on my mind the entire time I sat in the gun mount, as we played cat and mouse with the sonar contact. Keep in mind that the acronyms SNAFU and FUBAR were coined by some GI's who experienced chaos up front and personal.
