I think what he stated was not well thought out and it was uncalled for. It could be deemed offensive by some, with good reason even though I don't believe Spicer meant it to be offensive, and most people probably don't believe he did either. The point is, you have to be careful with hyperbole, which is at best, what his statement was.
This is why comparisons to the most extreme historical figures is usually not a good idea, in particular one who impacted the lives of some who are still living. There are tyrants and figures in history who do not have equals in regards to their atrocities. I am sure even Spicer realizes this.
