No, the numbers aren't misleading. Trump got the same slice of the vote that Romney and McCain got... which means largely the same people. He didn't win anyone over.
What happened was that because too many people voted third party, he was able to squeak by in some rust belt states Hillary should have put more resources in, but the polling told her she didn't have to.
