Smoking Bans

Should Smoking be Banned in Businesses?

I absolutely agree that people should have that choice and that they do not have the right to decide that for others.

Do you? Really? So should people have the right to work in an office where smoking is allowed? Eat in a restaurant where smoking is allowed?

Sure, but smokers are now a minority. If the majority vote to ban smoking in the workplace and restaurants, there is no longer a question.

Smokers are free to smoke where others are not breathing.

And no one has the right to force me to smoke at my work or public places.

Majority of people did not voted nor decided. Politicians did.

The majority don't smoke. Business owners don't want to lose customers so they lobbied for laws.

Duh.

How about smoking dens, like the old time opium dens. Get as sick as you want, stink to high heaven and leave sane people alone.

Frankly, as long as you're not exhaling where I am inhaling, I don't care.

Like cigar bars ?

The bans apply to them also (at least here )

Yep. That's the issue. Some people think that operating a business somehow means you sacrifice your rights. I don't buy that.

There's a difference between sacrificing your rights, and being on a much more stringent set of laws because you are in the public domain.

No, there's not.

Sure there is. An individual often has to domains. The public and private. Like I said, a person working for the govt is subject to much more in the way of the US Constitution.
An individual is not subject to the first amendment when at home, if they lead prayer at home, so what? If they go to school and do the same thing, then what? Why the difference?

Oh my freaking gawd?

Have you gone off the deep end?

Gotta a lot of customers heading down them mines?

Let's do a deal. When you respond to me, please, please explain yourself. I have no idea what you're going on about.

Good point. Now, hows that different from "we do not hire smokers"?

Actually, under the context it would be "we do not hire people who smoke at work"......

I stand with what I said.

Do you think an employee should be able to smoke while carrying out their duties? Do you think one employee should be able to endanger the life of another employee while at work?

No Idea how you get that from what I said.

Well I'm asking some questions. You could respond to the questions and then you'll understand.

The best way would be actually to educate them about smoking effects.

How many smokers already know the effects of smoking? Do they care? No, it's the people who don't smoke who care. Hence why non-smokers don't want to be around people smoking.

Generally smokers litter all over the place, will smoke where the can, will spend half their life borrowing lighters from people etc. They often don't care.

Restaurants casinos and bars should have the freedom to allow smoking sections or not. People should have the freedom to eat in those restaurants. Freedoms are what we are about.
You have no right to force others to breathe your filth

And you have a right to choose where you eat, you don't have to pick a smoking restaurant.

I only went to non-smoking establishments before the state ban took effect. If they allowed smoking, they didn't want me in there.

I didn't go to bars because I didn't like smoke. No problem.

I also don't go to tanning parlors because I don't like what I offer.

You got your freedom.

Yes

You have the freedom to go into public spaces without deciding whether of not you want to risk your health

Restaurants are private businesses and you are trying to impose your ideals on their freedoms.

So do, some don't. No one should be forced to be around smokers. But if they want to associate with people who are smoking, it's their business - not yours.

The also kick puppies and worship Satan. Would you like to see them rounded up and put in camps?

Private businesses are not kingdoms. They still must comply with local business. labor and safety ordinances

Dood

You attack me about bringing up radon (an indoor air quality issue), which was in response to Sillouttes post about a. 20 year old, long distance runner, afflicted with lung cancer. She indicated it must have been second hand smoke from working on a casino because she never smoked. My response was, statistically it was more likely Radon exposure

You attacked me for deflection.

Then you bring up mining regulations?

Get real and try to keep up.

These bans do not only restrict the business owners, but the customers that CHOOSE to frequent them.

Borrowing a lighter shows they don't care?

Specifically how ?

They sure do

A customer wishing to foul the air must take it outside

Fine, they can associate with who they like. But there's a difference between associating and working under.

Who's talking about camps? Oh, you. I'm just talking about banning smoking in the work place.

No, I didn't attack you for bringing up radon. I attacked you for bringing up radon for no reason. You didn't have an argument behind it. You could have brought up anything and it'd have made the same difference. You're always deflecting, because you're a stirrer and nothing else. You don't have a decent point to make ever because you don't care.

You're now trying to link radon towards your cause, and you've still not got anywhere close.

So there's stuff in the air which also causes health issues. And?

I made a point. You've completely side stepped the point, once again, and picked up on something that doesn't matter. You're about this far from getting put on the blocked list.

So mine owners shouldn't have to care about the health and life of their employees? If there's a mine disaster, so the feck what? They knew what they were getting themselves in for, it's all about profit and nothing about giving a damn?
