So Moscow’s most advanced weapon can be shot down with a 100% success rate by tech that the West developed almost 40 years ago? Fucking hilarious

These hypersonic weapons with their unreal velocities are launched at those speeds, then quickly slow down, so that by the time they reach their target their speed is not much greater than a conventional rocket or other projectile.

One can only hope that "we" have similar weapons - at least in the planning stage - and are just being secretive about it.

According Russian sources - the Patriot tried to defend itself, but was destroyed.

Nigeria with Snow gear not working as advertised? I'm utterly shocked!

Every time I read about the Khinzal on this board it gains another 5 Mach numbers. The Space Shuttle flew at Mach 25, all ballistic missiles are "hypersonic" if the only requirement if going fast.

The Khinzal is an air-launched Iskander whose lineage dates back to the Soviet era. It's about a mach 6 missile. It was developed back in the late 80's to replace the Tochka series which weren't very accurate.

It's within the capability of the PAC-3, but I would have thought "barely". It looks like more than "barely", if the reports are accurate.

Actually, we first started looking into them over 60 years ago. Back when one of the ideas for the SR-71 was to make a fighter variant.

And ultimately, each time it was looked into it was largely realized it was a silly weapon concept and was in opposition to how the US operates and their weapons.

The US decades ago developed the concept that most of their long range weapons (missiles) would be "low and slow", in order to easier evade detection and interception by potential enemies. Even though weapons like the TOMAHAWK and HARPOON can operate at significant altitudes, they do not. Even the air launched one quickly dive to as low as they can, even if the aircraft pops them out at 60,000 feet.

Hypersonic missiles by their very nature have to operate at a very high altitude. And that makes them easy to detect from great distances. Much farther than is even possible from more conventional missiles as they can be hidden by terrain and curvature of the Earth. A hypersonic missile can not do that, it must operate at high altitudes where the air is thin. And if they are used against an adversary without air dominance, they can be shot down by fighters with ease. Because all they really are is an unmanned fighter on a suicide course.
