Socialism...

I was outraged when I heard Ontario was considering this concept, I was floored, but as I often do, I read from people, and even was extremely surprised to read that Milton Friedman supported this in his lifetime (he admitted, it was one of his more contentious concepts), he called it "reverse income tax".

You know the irony of this concept? Depending on the costs to administer and work out the details and bureaucracy, it can be CHEAPER to pass on that money to ALL in the form of UBI than to pay for the bottoms on the seats. So, in a high priced, unionized province such as Ontario, where you have many making more than $100k a year working in these department, the taxpayer actually saves money and more is given to those who need it for disposable income. Also, it's a standard payment to everyone, so disabled, people on welfare, Employment Insurance etc.

So I am on the fence about the concept. Ontario has a pilot program already and it is also being tried in Norway I believe.

Well, yes and no. It is a basic payment for everyone, so some are on welfare right now, which is the premise you just described. Others are disabled, war vets (though not many in Canada compared to the U.S), on Employment insurance, old age pension etc. So it's one standard payment for all Little overhead, no conflicting effort and multi-systems, privacy issues etc.

It will shrink government and force them into the private sector, while in many cases saving taxpayers money, which is the end goal in some respects right?

As I said, I'm on the fence. Time will tell if it's an improvement.

Whose money are they using to pay these guaranteed salaries?

Do rich people get a basic payment? Are all the basic payments equal? Does a family of 5 get a basic payment for each member...no matter their age? Do prisoners get a basic payment?
