South Dakota governor signs bill allowing armed teachers in the classroom

Good on him.

I would love to see every teacher who wants to be minimally armed with a Tazer device or a firearm after they have been properly trained.

My position on this is that if the people in the school district want to allow their teachers to be armed then that's their decision, same if they don't.

I guess we'll see if the gloom and doom warnings of the anti-gun crowd of allowing this has any merit.

Support or opposition isn’t the issue, but efficacy.

The measure does not force a district to arm its teachers and would not force teachers to carry a gun.

On Monday, the South Dakota House voted 40-19 to accept the Senate version of the bill, which added a requirement that a school district must decide in a public meeting whether to arm teachers and others. Another Senate amendment allowed school district residents to push a school board's decision to a public vote.

One would hope and assume that school boards develop a comprehensive policy with regard to arming teachers. Ideally there would be teachers designated in a given school to carry a firearm; indeed, the fewer armed teachers the better. The designated teacher(s) should be required to complete extensive training, demonstrate proficiency with a firearm, and be required to carry a district-issued firearm kept at the school and provided the teacher upon her arrival at work.

It may prove to be a psychological deterrent, but it’s impossible to know how the mind of the criminally insane would process this information, a madman might see it as an opportunity to go out in a blaze of ‘glory,’ taking the lives of as many innocent children as possible, along with his own.

This might assuage the fears and concerns of parents and the local community in general, but will likely prove of little use in stopping a determined gunman.

Great... so now... we're exposing children to assuming the risk of being shot just because teachers don't like how they behave.

They don't even have to be misbehaved miscreants. They can just behave disagreeably, and the teacher can shoot them.

according to many of those who voted for Obama, no one lives in North Dakota and South Dakota, they think its all Farm land.

They've allowed this for years in Utah and no teacher there has shot a kid for misbehaving. Non-Sequitur
