Saudi Arabia accused of neglect over deadly disaster at hajj
Sep 25,`15 -- Saudi Arabia faced new accusations of neglect Friday in the hajj disaster that killed over 700 people, the second tragedy at this year's pilgrimage overseen by the kingdom's rulers who base their legitimacy in part on protecting Islam's holiest sites.
Leading the criticism was regional Shiite powerhouse Iran, which always seeks an opportunity to undermine its Sunni adversary. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in New York that at least 140 Iranians were killed. He suggested that "ineptitude" by the Saudi authorities involved in organizing the hajj was to blame for the two accidents this month that have resulted in at least 830 deaths.

In Tehran, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned a Saudi envoy for the second time in as many days to hear protests over the incident, a vice president blamed Saudi "mismanagement," and thousands marched in the streets and denounced the Saudi royal family. Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars and undertaken massive construction projects to make the annual hajj safer for the world's Muslims, and the last serious loss of life had occurred nine years ago.

An Iranian worshipper holds a poster of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and late revolutionary founder Ayatollah Khomeini, at top left of the poster as she chant slogans while attending an anti-Saudi protest rally on Thursday, after their Friday prayer service in Tehran, Iran, Friday, Sept. 25, 2015. Thousands of Iranian worshippers have marched in Tehran after Friday prayers to denounce the "incompetency" of Saudi Arabia in handling the annual hajj pilgrimage. The protest came a day after at least 719 pilgrims died during a crush on the outskirts of the holy city of Mecca.

In the worst hajj disaster in a quarter century, two huge waves of pilgrims converged Thursday on a street near a religious site in Mina, and 719 people were crushed or trampled to death, while 863 were injured. That followed an accident Sept. 11 in which a storm toppled a crane at the Grand Mosque in Mecca that killed 111 people. While Saudi authorities are still investigating Thursday's accident, Health Minister Khalid al-Falih has blamed it on the masses themselves, telling a Saudi broadcaster that "some pilgrims had moved in the wrong direction amid the crowds."

But a survivor who spoke to The Associated Press said some Saudi guards only exacerbated the stampede at Mina by refusing to open nearby gates that could have relieved the crush. The street where the incident took place is about 12 meters (36 feet) wide and lined with barricades, behind which are tents of hajj tour groups. Pilgrims move in one direction to and from a religious complex, where they throw stones at pillars representing the devil. On Thursday, the crowds apparently collided with each other at an intersection, the Interior Ministry said.

Well of course the Shiites can run Mecca much better. You just have to wait a few years until they get their hands on a nuke until they grab control. Grab some popcorn and your remote.

The rock could always be stolen again

I have always said the first thing Iran's shiites will do when they have their nuke is to blackmail the Saudi royals and instigate a shiite takeover of Mecca and Medina. The threats against Israel are just a great diversionary tactic and head fake to distract the world from the big prize, the Cradle of Islam. They know that Israel can turn all of Iran into charcoal in less than half an hour.

There are deaths almost every year during the hajj.

So what started the stampede, Chinese firecrackers or did someone drop a pet viper? Did a wild boar wander too close? Camel with rabies or MERS? A star of david in the clouds? Did someone shout "free I-phones"?

It might have been worse if it had happened going around the kaaba. That many people in the heat of late summer, early fall, is never wise. Someone stumbles or passes out and like dominoes, they start falling down.

The only way to reduce the chance of another tragedy is to limit the number of people or allow pilgrimages all year long to qualify as the hajj. Have smaller gatherings each month.

Maybe a mini hajj at mosques around the world. A portable replica of the Kaaba that travels around the world.

I remember when pilgrims could be counted in the thousands not the millions. Now every year there seems to be another expansion at Mecca.

Did the superstitious ever consider the crane accident as a warning?

King Salman got investigators on the case...

Investigation Underway over Deadly Hajj Stampede
Friday, September 25, 2015 - King Salman of Saudi Arabia is promising a speedy investigation to figure out what led to a deadly stampede during the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
At least 700 people were killed and 800 others hurt during the incident.

Witnesses say the stampede began when pilgrims met at an intersection in the valley of Mina, a site that all pilgrims have to file through in a single day.

"I saw people falling on the ground, other people trampling them. People were trampled, and the situation was out of control," Wael Abdullah a stampede survivor recalled.

The Saudi Interior Ministry said high temperatures and the fatigue of the pilgrims might also have been factors in Thursday's disaster.

Thanks for demonstrating empathy.

That was really cool.

Empathy with for what? Why they stampede like wild jackasses killing hundreds of innocent lives almost every fucking year.

if they aren't stampeding on their so called religious holidays, they're bombing fellow Muslims and any infidels they can find.

You are an outstanding human being.

Takes one to know one. I am of course bothered by the loss of innocent life. But there is something within the religion and culture that causes them to behave like this during their religious holidays, during a time that they're supposed to be at their best supposedly, don't you think?

Time for some heads to go on the chopping block!

It is madness to put so many people in one place and not expect deaths. The crush of people in every direction pressing forward with no pause is inevitably going to lead to disaster. Spread them at least 15 minutes or so apart in smaller groups. Put up stop lights to control the traffic, so to speak. Put in fenced lanes for those with disabilities, the elderly and those with smaller children.

Limit the hajj to once in a life time. Spread it out to more days, in phases for each group, so that all the people can cycle through the different stations.

Encourage more to visit during the off season, the rest of the year instead. Maybe discount the costs for off season.

Encourage pilgrimages to other sites, not just Mecca during the hajj as alternatives.

Live cam the events so people can be there in spirit, so to speak

Maybe on TV station in major countries to watch for those who cannot be on the computer. Maybe video tapes/DVD to watch any time. Watch at the local mosques with other muslims that could not make the trip.

Right now the hajj is more like the migration of the wildebeest or lemmings, and will only get worse.
100,000 security could not control the crowds. Iran blames a princes convoy in the Mina area.

The umrah should be allowed to fulfill the obligation of the 5th pillar. It is the safest alternative

Well actually, approximately 200 of the victims happen to be Iranians. The Ayatollah not only trashed the Saudi royals but Iran has announced a national day of mourning.
