Only 6% of federal employees work from an office full-time, and a third are fully remote. And some aren’t actually working when they “work from home,” a Senate investigation found.

“Washington is still operating as if it’s March 2020,” Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), the chair of the Senate DOGE Caucus and the report’s author, wrote.

“Just three percent of the federal workforce teleworked daily prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, six percent of workers report in-person on a full-time basis, while nearly one-third are entirely remote,” the report states.

Government office buildings have an occupancy rate of only 12%, yet the government spends $16 billion a year to operate them. Even the head of the General Services Administration, which manages federal real estate, works from home in Missouri.

“You may be more likely to see a ghost than a bureaucrat haunting the halls of some government buildings in Washington, D.C. these days,” Ernst continued.

And here we go. Our federal government is a bloated cesspool of waste. Elon and Vivek ought to have a field day right out of the gate

Most companies in the private sector has dragged their employees back to the office.... so the federal government can too.... covid is over...

Could cut costs by downsizing the offices. No point paying heating, electricity, and water for mostly empty buildings.
If the job can be done remotely then there is zero reason for building or renting offices. All that is savings. My son, retired now at 54, does some part time work from home. 10 or so hours per week for a high hourly wage. He loves it. Retired at 54, winning. Working in one's 60s, losing.

That's what I figure. It should be a win win. Employees get to work in better conditions, save money and time on commutes, spend more time with their families. Employers can cut costs on rent and utilities.

What do these remote government workers produce? What is the impact if they are laid off? My guess is 90 percent of them could be terminated and there would be zero impact to the function of government.

There are a LOT of things people have bad notions about.

I am absolutely outraged by this news story.....but not really. Mostly I am pissed other finally found my secret way to work. I started doing part of my job remotely two decades ago, give or take. It is a little easier these days with the technological advances but when I first started, I literally dialed directly into a desktop through its modem and it was about as slow as molasses. My then employer discovered after two attempts it was far easier to keep me than replace me. Since then I have always been able to keep one foot in the remote work world. I show up up most days for a few hours, but a lot of what I do I do at home via the interwebby box and call forwarding.

Could cut costs by downsizing the entire bureaucracy, too. I live right outside DC, and at least half my neighbors are govt. “workers.” Imsee fhem at the pool, on line at the movies up the block, at the grocery store, out walking the trail, etc,, etc., every day of the workweek.

Time to out a stop to this scam.

You do realize that government workers do not work a 9 to 5 schedule Monday through Friday. When I worked as a government contractor, I worked 4 to midnight, Monday through Friday. We had workers on different days of the week. We took care of the west coast but were based on the east coast. I could do anything I wanted if it was during the morning.

How do you think government people work on east coast time when Hawaii is 6 hours behind?

I say fine...You can go ahead and not come into the office, because you no longer have a job...

Yep… fire ‘em and hire people who will, or trim the fat if the job isn’t necessary at all.

Our government is like Lizzo.. needs a MAJOR diet

Stop making excuses. We are talking about government employees who are goofing off half the day and making $150,000 a year. It’s shameful. And the ones I know were bitching about having to go in just ONE day a week. Why do they feel so entitled?

Our taxes are paying for this scam, and it’s past time it ends.

And don’t get me started on the contractors. I know a guy who retired from the government, started his own contracting firm, put his wife on contracts as the “administrator” - and together the two of them cleared $500,000 a year.

Trump can reverse that. It’s just another F-U by Biden to the Americans who voted to stop the nonsense.

So another day 1 act of our new leader is to layoff thousands of people.

No, they still can keep their jobs if they are willing to come to work.

But as far as layoffs, private employees have gone through that - many more than once - when the place they work for isn’t covering expenses. Why should feds get special privileges that taxpayers have to pay for?

It’s time feds learned what real work feels like, and time the government stops acting like money grows on trees.

Time to get up get dressed and GO TO THE OFFICE you lazy people...
The naivety of magats never ceases to amaze me.

Do you have any idea of the cost of office buildings, electricity, cleaning, desks, maintenance and so on?

These have been eliminated by several companies including my employer.

I now provide the desk, the electricity, the bathroom services, lighting and so on and I am a lot more productive than I was in a tiny cube packed into a huge open plan office that is noisy and brightly lit. There's no advantage in having a huge office building and wasting people's time travelling two or more hours per day, totally wasted time.

Musk is a dunce.

Typical corporate mentality. Expect great work for lower pay, mistreat your workers. Then fire the most productive ones

You are as ignorant as your bigoted and have likely never even had a demanding job or had to commute.

Just watch, the first thing you will notice with this DOGE crap is increased waiting times when calling a federal office, reduced quality, poorer service and so on. The staffing levels often ensure a certain standard of service.

Note too that what Musk has done to Twitter is largely secret, huge numbers of users have left the platform and the business has lost huge amounts of money, that's how competent Musk is.
