Teen birth rates highest in most religious states

I'm going out on a limb and guessing that high rates of religiousness and high rates of teen pregnancy come from the same source: poverty.

Teen birth rates highest in most religious states
MSNBC - 9-17-09Link may be due to communities frowning on contraception, researchers say
U.S. states whose residents have more conservative religious beliefs on average tend to have higher rates of teenagers giving birth, a new study suggests.
The religious right denies contraception or sex education to their teens, thinking their good girls and boys won't have sex. Oh, please.

No, the religious right maintains that abortion is murder. We teach our children to save themselves for marriage...but when they don't, we don't condone murder.

It has nothing to do with us viewing our children as somehow different or "good". Nor does it have anything to do with the denial of contraceptives.

It has to do with not dragging our kids to abortion factories when they get knocked up, and reinforcing the lie that babies aren't human.

Even accounting for abortions? What do you think the STD rate is in comparison? So not only are they unwed and pregnant, but diseased. Wow, how, uh, Christian.
Well, we know the southern attitude. They got pregnant, they must suffer the consequences. No help. No insurance. They are parasites on society. Unless the grandma is Sarah Palin. Then it's ok.
"Southern Attitude" huh?:
AIDS & HIV statistics for the USA by state and city

Area of residence AIDS cases per 100,000 population in 2007
Alabama 8.4
District of Columbia 148.1
New York 24.9

Last time I checked, D.C. wasn't in the south.

Oh, this is rich.

You're looking at just one disease. Look at all of them:

Rank
......Primary and secondary syphilis ...........Chlamydia .....................Gonnorhea
1 .......................Louisiana (12.4) ...........Mississippi (745.1) ........Mississippi (285.7)
2...................... Alabama (8.3) ...............Alaska (732.9) ..............Louisiana (259.7)
3 .......................Georgia (7.3) ...........South Carolina (611.7) ......South Carolina (239.0)

STD statistics for the USA

What's especially hilarious is that Alaska is right in the middle. That's right, except for HIV, southern states lead in EVERY STD.

Jesus, protect us from welfare and government medical. Because apparently, they lead to STDs and teen pregnancy.

POSITIONED AS IT IS, SQUAT ON THE VIRGINIA MARYLAND BORDER, SOUTHERNMOST, D.C. certainly is in the "South."

, but maybe all should start to refer to the 'tards in the country, and their states, as FORMERLY SLAVE HOLDING AREAS

Oh, and the Mid-Atlantic states certainly do NOT think of their area as part of the NORTHEAST! Historically, the dividing line is Mason-Dixon East of the Ohio River, The Ohio River west to the Mississippi, and so on and one would have to ask what Missourians and East Texans consider themselves now...

I guess blacks and Hispanics are more "religious":

The CDC on STDs & minorities:

"This risk is especially notable for youth of minority races and ethnicities. Continual HIV prevention outreach and education efforts, including programs on abstinence and on delaying the initiation of sex, are required as new generations replace the generations that benefited from earlier prevention strategies.

"African Americans were disproportionately affected by HIV infection, accounting for 55% of all HIV infections reported among persons aged 13–24"

"Early age at sexual initiation. According to CDC’s Youth Risk Behavioral Survey (YRBS), many young people begin having sexual intercourse at early ages: 47% of high school students have had sexual intercourse, and 7.4% of them reported first sexual intercourse before age 13"

Yeah, there are a lot of those damn religious black & Hispanic folks spreading HIV, apparently.

"Some of the highest STD rates in the country are those among young people, especially young people of minority races and ethnicities"

"Research has shown that a large proportion of young people are not concerned about becoming infected with HIV"

Gosh, must be something those religious folks teach them. Not stuff they pick up at school from counselors who keep telling them it's really unlikely that they'll pick up HIV, or that sex is good and natural, and a RIGHT.

"Nearly 1 in 4 African Americans and 1 in 5 Hispanics live in poverty [13]. The socioeconomic problems associated with poverty, including lack of access to high-quality health care, can directly or indirectly increase the risk for HIV infection [14]. Young people who have dropped out of school are more likely to become sexually active at younger ages and to fail to use contraception [15]."

So I wonder...in what population are school drop outs more common? The white religous population? I mean, it's such a huge number of people, and after all, we all KNOW that despite the FACTS they are the ones causing the problems by withholding contraception from..er...apparently black & minority kids??? WTF?

"Populations of minority races or ethnicities are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic. To reduce further the incidence of HIV, CDC announced a new initiative, Advancing HIV Prevention, in 2003. This initiative comprises 4 strategies: making HIV testing a routine part of medical care, implementing new models for diagnosing HIV infections outside medical settings, preventing new infections by working with HIV-infected persons and their partners, and further decreasing perinatal HIV transmission.

Through the Minority AIDS Initiative, CDC explores ways to reduce health disparities in communities made up of persons of minority races or ethnicities who are at high risk for HIV. These funds are used to address the high-priority HIV prevention needs in such communities."

Gosh, I don't see anything there about addressing the disproportionate problems of the RELIGIOUS community, do you?

Fact Sheet: HIV/AIDS among Youth | Factsheets | CDC HIV/AIDS

Gosh, suddenly no hits?

C'mon, let's see some more short trolling posts and long rambling posts about how the evil religious white population is responsible for the fact that more minorities get pregnant and come down with STDs than anyone else.

How, exactly, do we cause that?

Wrong again. The government wants to teach comprehensive sex education, but the religious fight it. They say if you teach kids pregnancy and disease prevention, they will run out and do it. Apparently, they just run out and do it anyway. The religious want their kids sick, pregnant and ignorant. If it worked for them, it can work for their children. So sad.

pretty much mirrors my thoughts. kids are going to have sex regardless, so by telling them condoms are evil, its just going to make more pregnancies. also by hiding things from them it just makes it more desirable which is a big flaw in the religious logic of not teaching their kids full blown sex education. It also leads to stupidity like the kids who think if you stand up during sex then the girl won't get pregnant. generations are so supposed to progress with knowledge, but restricted education makes sure people will be stuck in 1950 forever.

wear one for the stim pak !!!!!

according to the prostitute Pelosi, there sould be less or no more kids. they cost to much  and the stim pack will have more $$$. but what if you have an accident???? oh dear. well there's always the trash can or dumpster out back.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is defending the fact that hundreds of millions of dollars of the forthcoming stimulus package are to be spent on “family planning.” Her argument is very simple. The economy is bad. Having babies costs money. Would-be parents need to save their money by not having babies.

And those who cannot afford to support them not having babies DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU WHY?????????????????????

This Missourian will tell you the Missouri and east Texas are certainly part of the South.

As chance would have it, I was born and raised just outside of D.C. and can assure you Northern Virginia, Eastern Maryland (east of Frederick), and D.C. are definitely Northern.

Negative Ghostrider, the pattern is full.

In the 1860's Maryland was Southern...today Eastern Maryland is part of the North.

If Marylanders were actually Southern they wouldn't have such atrocious accents.
