There is a perennial "fight" between the Vatican and American local priests on the status of gay unions (regardless of how they are characterized). Many priests, nuns, and other Church activists want the Pope to make a pronouncement that is more gay-friendly, for reasons that one should probably not speculate about. Gay unions, they say, are "good."
But here's the thing: These conflicts, and the statements made on both sides, refuse to address the fundamental moral issue: The immorality of same-sex sodomy.
It is one thing to say that there is nothing wrong with homosexuals and lesbians pairing up and making a lifetime commitment to each other that mirrors marriage, but clearly, the Church cannot sanction a long-term relationship, the core of which is homosexual sodomy, which is unequivocally condemned in the Bible. It is analogous to the head of AA telling its members to go ahead and join wine-tasting clubs, but don't swallow the wine.
Even the reporting of these situations is defective. In the linked article, why doesn't the journalist ask one of those priests if they are sanctioning gay sodomy? Clear as day. Yes or no? Maybe they don't want to hear the answer.
