UK should end Chagos Islands control - UN

The UK should end its control of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean "as rapidly as possible", the UN's highest court has said.

Mauritius claims it was forced to give up the islands - now a British overseas territory - in 1965 in exchange for independence, which it gained in 1968.

The International Court of Justice said the islands were not lawfully separated from the former colony of Mauritius.

This is welcome news, not least for our displaced friends. The Islands should be returned to them as soon as possible. Of course the presence of a US airbase complicates matters and that is likely to be more of a problem than the pathetic UK government.

Evidently it wasn't such a big deal when Obama was President. His administration wanted to “pivot” to the Asia Pacific region to re-balance the focus of the US military, including the use of Diego Garcia, which is one of the Mauritian islands.

DG is a part of the Chagos. Maybe trump could show some leadership here ?

If Trump is the leader I think he is, he will retain out military presence in that area. The military bases we have there serve as support locations that are within reach of Middle Eastern hot spots.

There are still terrorists that are in dire need of killing in the ME, and we are in no ways done with delivering them to their imaginary afterlife of 73 virgins.

I can't but doubt any of us will live to see that happen.

The UK Foreign Office said: "This is an advisory opinion, not a judgment."

It added it would look "carefully" at the detail of the opinion, which is not legally binding.

Of course, the U.S. can negotiate a lease so as to preserve their base on Diego Garcia, and pay up, not to forget pay up for the decades of prior use of stolen land, and also pay up for the clean-up of the toxic superfund sites they are probably still in the process of creating, as they usually do wherever their military are using other peoples' lands.

And while the empire is dead, you can see the old imperial mindset is still very much alive and kicking:

The UK has previously said it will hand the islands back to Mauritius when they are no longer required for defence purposes.

Referencing that, the Foreign Office said: "The defence facilities on the British Indian Ocean Territory help to protect people here in Britain and around the world from terrorist threats, organised crime and piracy."

To paraphrase, "It's not ours, we had no right to expel the rightful inhabitants, we had no right to keep them away from their ancestral lands, but as we find your land useful, you can go and FY."

Nice. You know what's even more disheartening? Now, as May faces defeat after defeat, along with the death throes of her Brexit "deal", she has even less of a stature to endure and accept another hit, which in turn makes Britain leaving even less likely than it was at any other time.

I have no great expectations. It has been going on for so long and lets face it. There arent many of them and they are all "darkies".
