If anything the numbers above over-estimate the jobs impact of coal relative to other industries. Since 2014 the coal industry has shrunk further according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, to 50,300 employees as of February 2017.

What made me look this up was a discussion where they said when the US/Trump coal contingent got up to speak about the benefits of 18th century coal technology, the entire room of hundreds walked out.

I remember when the US used to be the world leader in so many areas. I would like say it was years ago, but it was only last year. The right wing says "good", but the rest of the US feels it's tragic.

The Hussein did his job well, shutting down 400 coal mines and 83,000 coal jobs lost.

Obama Kept His Promise, 83,000 Coal Jobs Lost And 400 Mines Shuttered

The price of gas shut down the coal mines.

To be fair, more people deal with Arby's on a retail basis than coal companies.

The average salary of a coal worker is $75,000 per annum

The average salary of a fast food worker is $16,500 per annum.

So....

Coal is mainly used to produce electricity and it’s used in steel production.

Two things progressives hate. They want us all living in huts and all of our manufacturing to be done by the Chinese.

No, they want us using solar energy and other renewable energy that doesn't destroy the environment.

If that is their salary, the coal miners are way over paid.

Today's miners aren't the same as we seen in movies about the '30s. The entry-level jobs in mining are semi-skilled a two-year apprenticeships . Mine engineers are all degree holders.

Compare that to the skill level and education of an entry-level fast food worker.

They make more than teachers, who hold very skilled positions and who all have 4 year and 6 year degrees. It's absurd.

They make more than police officers ($61,000) and fireman ($47,000). Really absurd that coal miners would make more.

So go be a coal miner.

That's not the point. Are you really that dense? It's the value of the job. Teachers, policeman and fireman do far more for us than coal miners. The value of a coal miner's job is much less than that of others who are making less; as well, teachers are highly educated and police and fireman are highly skilled and risk their lives. They should all make more, not the same, as coal miners.

Teachers are parroting morons, cops are otherwise unemployable and often unfit for military service(if they can't qualify for either there is Whackenhut) and firemen get paid to lift weights, sleep and cook .....until there is a fire. This is where the life on the line comes in. Those crazy fucks will run right into flaming buildings ! To save a kitten !

Wages are not determined by how we subjectively value the social benefit of the job ... they are determined by one thing and only one thing. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST to hire a qualified person to do that job? That is the total value of the job for determining compensation.

Coal workers make more than teachers because people are willing to be teachers for less and fewer people are willing to work down a coal mine for less than what they get.

Junk Bond traders, professional athletes, trophy wives, and film actors make millions of dollars because they possess a skill or an attribute than no one else possesses who will do the same job for less.

You personally might not think that coal miners contribute to society commensurate with their compensation. But, I happen to believe there would be very few schools and baby hospitals without steel and electricity that coal provides.

It's true, the coal industry is very productive and a large part of our economy.

. You are still talking socialism, as you would like to determine the outcomes of incomes for private companies, and this is being based simply upon your views on life, and not upon what these individual industries can and do offer their employees. We have choices in life to go into any industry or job we want, but we don't get to dictate (after getting into these industries or jobs) their pay grade programs.. Only unless they are not being representative of at least a standard in which we as a government and a nation see as fit to require in that they uphold a decency standard line that shows they aren't engaging in exploitation of their employees, the abuse of their employees, the detriment of their employees, and so forth and so on.
