The liberal wants to buy stuff from the rich and then steal the money back?

Thomas Paine proposed a 100% inheritance tax to pay for his welfare scheme.

In this case, the bequeather gives nothing: the receiver pays nothing. The only matter to him is that the monopoly of natural inheritance, to which there never was a right, begins to cease in his person. A generous man would not wish it to continue, and a just man will rejoice to see it abolished.

Thomas Jefferson believed in a progressive tax structure, with a large portion of people not paying any taxes.

Hmmm. We have 47% of Americans not paying a federal income tax. How...Jeffersonian!

Well, the Democrats are the party of Jefferson.

Nope.

It is the Right which worships him and frequently quotes him.

Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican. They called themselves "the Republican Party". Later on, Martin van Buren and Andrew Jackson split off a branch that called themselves the Democratic Party.

They also called themselves the "Democratic Party" at times. But we could spend all night coming up with new names for a rose and asking each other if it smells the same.

Apparently you are unaware of the fact that the Democratic Party is, literally "The Party of Jefferson" whereas the Republican Party is "The Party of Lincoln."

"We still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping at the spoil of the multitude. Invention is continually exercised to furnish new pretenses for revenue and taxation. It watches prosperity as its prey and permits none to escape without a tribute."

---Thomas Paine

Now do you see why we are positve that liberalism is based in pure ignorance?

Speaking of ignorance, I see you quoted Thomas Paine to support your arguments against a welfare state. You really, really should read Agrarian Justice.:laugh::laugh:

So you thought repeating that particular Paine quote would negate his later work in Agrarian Justice where he proposed a welfare state and social security to be paid for by a 100 percent inheritance tax?

dear, Jefferson founded Republican party in 1793 with Madison. They believed in very very tiny govt exactly like modern Republicans. Welcome to your first lesson in American History!!

It is a fact that Jefferson is adored by the Right and is often quoted by right wingers right here on this forum.

dear, always start with assumption that a liberal will be a total illiterate. How do you reconcile his statement on taxes with his welfare state proposal??

Thomas Jefferson:
I own that I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive.

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

My reading of history convinces me that bad government results from too much government.

Our country is now taking so steady a course as to show by what road it will pass to destruction, to wit: by consolidation of power first, and then corruption, its necessary consequence.

Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the form of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question.

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions that I wish it to be always kept alive.

Most bad government has grown out of too much government.

Were we directed from Washington when to sow and when to reap, we should soon want bread.

Thomas Paine believed all property acquired in life should be forfeited upon one's death and that there was no right of inheritance. He believed all that property should be handed over the State for disposition to pay for his welfare state and social security scheme.

There was a lot of concern over "natural rights" and it was the philosophy at the time that the accumulation of wealth could only occur by violating someone else's natural rights. Jefferson sought to mitigate this by a progressive taxation scheme and the abolition of primogeniture. Thomas Paine believed it should be mitigated by providing everyone a government stipend upon reaching the age of maturity and a further stipend to spend in one's golden years, and by the abolition of inheritance entirely..

If those are not "liberal" ideas by today's Right/Left standards, I don't know what is. The abolition of inheritance is extremely leftist thinking.

When one speaks of "The Founders", one must be aware they were not a monolithic entity of one mind.

Twenty-nine years after his death – quite a trick.

He's adored by the left as well, and often quoted by the same. Both facts are irrelevant. "The Party of Jefferson" is the label given to the Democrats, contrasting with the "The Party of Lincoln" label that is applied to the GOP. My entire point was a simple tongue-in-cheek play on those labels. You're making ridiculous stretches of reason for nothing.
