I remember listening to an interview with Neil DeGrasse Tyson where he was asked why we haven't been to the Moon recently. He said that the biggest reason for the "space race" was pretty much bragging rights. We wanted to say we beat the Soviets to the Moon. We made it there because another country embraced Communism.
