In the last 11 presidential elections, the party with the most primary voters has a 4-7 record.

That is, getting more votes in the primary makes it more likely a party will lose the general.

Intelligent people can figure out why that's so. A party quickly rallying around one candidate is better in the general, but boring for the primary, so it will result in fewer primary voters.
