Tuskegee Airman who flew 142 WWII combat missions dies at 99

It was talked about in another thread the disgraceful way black men were treated when they returned from the war.

True and disgrace, but we've moved beyond that haven't we. Now Blacks serve proudly and equally in our armed forces and have so since 1947. But, go ahead keep dwelling on the distant past. Yeah, that will help.

We have advanced from those years I agree, but are we truly were we need to be? I think not, just talk to a few black soldiers.

You can thank a Democrat for that. All during reconstruction up to now, the Southern White Democrats(KKK) have wanted not only to hang blacks but the white republicans along side them. Just look at the Democrat Bernie Supporter who shot up the Republican Congressmen. Nothing has changed except the year.

You mean the conservative democrats who are conservative republicans today. Republicans today have the mindset today of the southern, conservative democrats of those days.

I had the honor of meeting a Tuskegee Airman in Vegas over ten years ago. He was late in the pipeline and the war ended before he could go overseas. I bought him a drink and we sat and talk as two flyers. It was an honor I will always cherish.

I watched a documentary on the Tuskegee Airman a few years back. Although the program got support from the White House, specifically Eleanor Roosevelt, it was resisted at lower levels due to the racism of the time. The people in charge of running the program and selecting the pilot candidates tried to sabotage the program by making the entry requirements extremely high. All that ended up doing was eliminating the average, above average and excellent candidates. What they ended up with was a pool of candidates who were the elite of the elite physically and mentally. Above prime material for fighter pilot training.

Hoisted by their own petard.

Exactly and all of those black MEN proved themselves more than worthy of heroics.
They'd slash the throats of the street chimps of today.

Some of us conservative whites honor ALL who gave so much for this country. Cant you leave it at that?

I've always found this print touching. It's called "Return of the Red Tails". Four Red Tails escorting home a wounded B-24.
The question hangs behind this painting: Do the B-24 crewmen know who is escorting them out of danger?

Do they CARE?

It's ashamed how those airmen were treated. But we're basing it on todays' societal norms. Back then, that was normal.

But I'm sorry, those men put their lives on the line to bring our boys back in those bombers. They are heros no matter the pigment in their skin.

More derailment. You guys can't get off your racist bandwagon for one minute to honor the passing of a hero.

What ass hats. Apologize to the OP.

Racism and racist was a part of this hero's history dumbass.
Well if he was a racist, then fuck him.

He wasn't a racist moron, he had to deal with it racist and racism.

I think what you're saying is does the crew care who is escorting them as long as they HAVE an escort. Who knows? Hollywood would have you think they do, but in reality I think they'd be more concerned with not getting their asses shot off and as long as the American fighters could keep the Luftwaffe busy it wouldn't really matter who it was.

I wouldn't care if those pilots were orange. Little donald trumps, if they could keep the zeros from tearing my wings off I don't give a shit what color they are.
