U.S. Immigration officials ease immigration rules for Filipinos in the wake of killer typhoon

The U.S. Customs and Immigration Service is allowing Filipinos to change or extend their status and expediting requests by Filipino F-1 students to get employment authorization

The USCIS is easing the rules for Filipino nationals to “establish or maintain” lawful status in the wake of the typhoon that ravaged that country. Last Friday, the agency announced that it would allow overstayed Filipino nonimmigrants to change or extend status, expedite requests by Filipino F-1 students to get employment authorization, and expedite the processing of family petitions, among other measures. You can read more about the special rules that apply to Filipino nationals at Homepage | USCIS.

Some advocates are calling for the Obama administration to grant Filipino nationals here Temporary Protected Status (TPS). That would allow Filipinos, including those here unlawfully, to live and work here temporarily and to travel abroad with USCIS permission. The federal government grants TPS to individuals from a country that the Department of Homeland Security has designated as a place where civil unrest or natural disaster makes return home risky. For example, after the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010, DHS granted TPS to individuals from that country. The country whose nationals were most recently designated as TPS-eligible was Syria.
