Actually, Russia will fail under the weight of its tremendous battlefield casualties and the sanctions and that will lead to its withdrawal from Ukraine, but the sanctions will continue, nonetheless, because allowing Russia to recover will only lead to another invasion.

Russia never took Kharkiv. It was one of the main objectives of the invasion in February, second only to Kiev. They advanced into Kharkiv city at the end of February but were pushed back out and dozens of Russian troops were captured.

They had it almost encircled, and for two months they shelled it daily, but were never able to re-enter the city.

Beginning of May, the UA went on the offensive and began pushing the Russians back to the border and retaking the surrounding villages. The Russians around Kharkiv have been slowly losing ground ever since.
