A U.S. Navy sailor has been detained in Venezuela after traveling there on personal leave without required authorization from U.S. military authorities, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Wednesday.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, declined to provide further details, including any information on why the sailor was detained.
White House national security spokesperson John Kirby confirmed that a U.S. service member had been detained and said Washington was trying to get more information from Venezuelan authorities.
"We're obviously in touch as appropriate, as you would be, with Venezuelan authorities to try to get more knowledge," Kirby added.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

This sailor choose to go there on their own, without authorization.

Some people are just not very bright.

Well, it depends on his reasons.

If it is for nefarious purposes than he is a traitor.

If it was a mistake, maybe a trip he had planned months ago or something you shouldn't gloat and wag a finger. He is a soldier in the U.S military, why would you be so flippant?

It really does not depend on the reasons. There are countries one cannot go to with specific approval in advance while serving in the Military. Venezuela is one of them.

This sailor broke the rules.

Actually they are a sailor, not a soldier. And they willingly broke the rules and went to the country without prior approval.

Actually, its unknown right now if the sailor in question "willingly broke the rules" at all.

He could have easily been kidnapped by Maduro's thugs or possibly just be a traitor working for the illegitimate Venezuelan communistos.

Possibly he might have been on a mission to gather intelligence in Venezuela as well.

Difficult to say, without further information which is lacking right now.

We'll see how tremendous Biden and Harris are at getting the fellows repatriation.

If that lame duck Biden had said that the Maduro opposition actually won their election and Maduro will not be respected as the head of Venezuela by the US, you never know what might have happened there.

But the "best version of Biden eveh" couldn't muster up support for the Maduro opposition. He's been just too busy avoiding the 25th Amendment and bankrupting us by extending the war in Ukraine.

But I agree with you that this sailor seems to have made a giant mistake and should pay some consequences for it.
