Virginia judge strikes down gay marriage ban

At least 33 states have adopted prohibitions of same-sex marriage, but not all bans are the same.

Ruling by U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen sets the stage for a possible Supreme Court showdown, though cases from Utah and Oklahoma also are headed that way

A federal judge in Virginia has struck down the state's prohibition on same-sex marriage, joining a growing list of state and federal courts that have granted gay and lesbian couples the right to marry following two landmark Supreme Court rulings in June.

Little by little, equality will become the law of the land.

Which, since this is the United States, is as it should be.

Congratulations to the happy couples able to marry today - Valentine's Day.

(Its also MY anniversary.:smiliehug:)

The judge is so ignorant of the law that he could not tell the difference between the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. This ruling should be overturned on grounds of judicial incompetence.

Be sure to check out the maps. Even the more backward red states are recognizing basic rights.

:)

Virginia also had a ban on interracial marriage until it was overturned by the SCOTUS in 1967. So much for the cons wanting government to stay out of your business.

The people are recognizing nothing. Corrupt judges and corrupt legislatures are forcing these people to give up their rights and PRETENDING that these actions are supported by the people.

They can't marry today. Marriages have been stayed pending appeal.

Most polls show majority support for same sex marriage.

One more reason why the R will lose the next general election. I mean, besides the fact they don't have a qualified candidate.

If so, then there would be no need for judicial or legislative activism.

Yeah, just like there is no need for the Civil Rights Act or the laws against violence to women and children.

Give it a rest, wouldja?

You live in the United States. Because of that, you are stuck with the Constitutionally guaranteed equality for all.

Love it or leave it, traitor.

How are anyone's civil and religious liberties prevented by marriage equality?

what rights are being given up by this ruling?

Only the right to keep other people from enjoying the same rights and privileges that she has. That's about it.

Marriage equality necessitates legalizing incestuous marriage and polygamy. If you don't agree, you don't believe in marriage equality. are you a bigot?

Congrats to virginia if that's what the people there want, though I doubt it since a court overruled the will of the people.

No, it doesn't, and, yes, I do believe in marriage equality. Your fallacy is obvious.

Once again, Steve, tell us your civil and religious liberties prevented by marriage equality?[/q
