Yes the were several contributing factors. The interstate system allowed whites to buy new homes in the suburbs, but still had easy access to jobs in the city. The public schools were failing. Crime was raising. The Detroit police force was incompetent. And the racial aspect further resulted in whites leaving. Housing valves plummeted.

Unfortunately blacks refused to maintain neighborhoods, which lead to vast numbers of homes and businesses being demolished. Some really great architectural was lost.
