You are severely ignorant. The top 20% of earners pay roughly 84% of all income tax. Those people have too much to lose to participate in this lunacy. On top of that the lunatics in government have allowed themselves to spend money whether they have it or not. Paying collectors is not an issue. They will get the money.

Even so, if a significant number them quit paying up, there wouldn’t be enough federal goons to round them up.

Well, it is kind of a combination of both, printing and borrowing.

As I understand it, the Federal Reserve offers the sale of bonds via the Treasury Department by which it finances US debt. It then buys back what does not sell so that the government does not fall short EVER, thus the Federal Reserve extends credit directly to the Treasury on whatever shortfall they cant get others to buy.

The Federal Reserve does this by simply opening a new account for credit and filling it in with the required number of 1's and 0's to buy back the unsold Treasuries.

Since these are Federal Reserve bank notes, they can legally do this as they can extend as much credit to the US Treasury as they want.

Normally a bank has to keep a certain minimum ratio of assets to credit, but the Federal Reserve individual banks have never had to face a complete audit of all their member banks simultaneously, and they have been able to shift funds around to meet the demands of individual audits for about a century now, as I understand it, so there is much doubt among many people whether it is truly solvent as any other bank or banking system would have to be.
