You see, only a very hard-skilled, faithful to the ideals and possessing an unusually strong will can resist Nazi propaganda in the place where this very Nazism is located, and there are very few such people, mostly the population eats the false propaganda without complaint and uncritically.
Here, for example, many places slip information about the huge number of suicides of ordinary civilian non-partisan Germans in 1944-1945 at the approach of the Red Army.
And all because Goebbels in 1943 directed Katyn and broadcast this stuff to the whole world with the main message that this is how wild untermenshch will deal with "civilized Europeans", and then compounded it with blood-chilling stories about mass rapes of Aryan blondes by monsters from Asia.
The seeds fell on the prepared soil: the Germans knew very well what atrocities were committed in the occupied territories, and how they themselves mistreated the "Ostarbeiters" and logically assumed that they would do the same to them.
That's why the Wehrmacht fought fanatically until the very end, and many Germans actually took their own lives and families, not wanting to suffer in the clutches of "bloody communist maniacs".
