The cops got a call about a stranger breaking into a house. They got there and observed a man breaking into a house who claimed to live there. They asked for him to provide ID, (a reasonable request under the circumstances) and he got up on his high horse and refused to comply. What did the cops do wrong? He wasn’t “in” his home, he was breaking in. All he had to do was act like a reasonable person and cooperate and nothing would happpen. I had something very similar happen to me. I was at Camp Pendleton for a rifle match and locked my keys in my car. I was trying to take the pop out back window apart when a carload of MPs showed up. Naturally the first question was ID and registration. I produced my Army Reserve ID and told them my registration was locked in the car with my keys, and I would be happy to produce it after I figured out how to get into the car, we had a good laugh and they helped me take the window apart. No big deal, now if I had gotten hostile, they’d have cuffed me and taken me in until they could ID me and probably dragged their feet in the process. Being reasonable always pays, being unreasonable always has costs. The cops in both cases were doing their jobs and didn’t deserve having attitude thrown at them.
