What statement does a nose ring make?

Genesis 24:47--"And I put the ring upon her nose, and the bracelets upon her hands." Rebecca, daughter-in-law of Abraham, received a nose-ring and bracelets as wedding presents. But even though it's not a "new fad" and the custom is thousands of years old, I still find it unattractive.
