Missouri just passed a big sales tax increase to maintain roads due to gas tax shortfall. This is the government forcing us to subsidize to oil companies. The constitutional amendment bars the state from raising the gas tax or implementing toll roads during the lifespan of the sales tax. That's just great, big oil punishing people for biking, taking the train or staying home not burning their fuel on the highway.

The oil companies aren't punishing you they don't make any money from the gas tax.

Yes the politicians are corrupt & bought by Big Oil & Big Auto. Missouri is one of the only states in the U.S. to permit lawmakers to accept unlimited gifts from lobbyists. This pay-to-play culture distorts the political process at the expense of ordinary citizens.

my state needs a higher gas tax. more fuel efficient cars means the roads are seeing more wear and fewer tax dollars coming in. we don't need a huge raise, but our roads could use more funding.

First why don't you find out exactly how much your state collects in gas taxes and then find out how much of it was actually spent on road maintenance before you start fleecing people for more money.

I can tell you with fact that the amount spent is more than collected in taxes.

The Federal Highway Trust Fund has been running a $41 billion shortfall since 2008 due to non-indexed low fuel/gas tax. Congress has been funding the shortfalls by transferring $41 billion from the general fund of the Treasury to the Highway Trust Fund. The Congress has enacted an additional transfer of $12.6 billion that is scheduled to occur in 2014. If lawmakers chose to continue authorizing such transfers, they would have to transfer an additional $15 billion in 2015 and increasing amounts in sub-sequent years to prevent future shortfalls, if spending was maintained at the 2013 level, as adjusted for inflation.
