FYI - the US is not a European country :)
You did not limit the answer to European countries, and you did not list Russia, arguably a European country, and if not for the US, Russia might very well be the leading country in Europe. Why would you want to choose a country that did not protect Europe from the Nazis and did not protect Europe from the USSR/Russia?

Depends what you understand by "leading"

The EU by definition is a "democratic committee" of nations, much like our states, so, any one of them "leading" the others seems contrary to the basic mandate of the EU. In the USA, the Electoral College is designed just for that reason so that no state "leads," and all states have as equal a voice as possible.

But honestly, I looked at your list and found an argument against ANY of those countries listed as being in a "leadership" position.

I said: IN EUROPE

How could the US lead IN Europe?
Why not? Is the UK in Europe? Is Ireland in Europe? What other single countries has played and is playing as large a role in the defense of Europe, in the economic welfare of Europe, in the foreign policies of the EU? The US already is the leading country in Europe. A few miles of ocean make little difference.

Where would Europe be without France? Right where it is. Where would Europe be without Germany? Right where it is. Where would Europe be without the US? Paying tribute to Moscow.

The UK is in Europe.

And Ireland is both in Europe and in the EU.
